22nd June 2019 - Fantastic organisation, founded by a true Gambian Toubab. They help sensitise the owners of working donkeys and horses, giving them the insight needed for a happy partnership. Giving out project donkeys to farmers, who without their help, would not afford a donkey of their own, these donks are monitored, to make sure that all is well. They care for not only horses and donkeys, but all animals in need. Dogs, cats, hyenas, crocodiles and camels being some..Goats and sheep also seem to find their way to Sambel or Makasutu. Their staff and vets often going the extra mile or 30 to pick up injured animals, in the middle of the night. Without them Gambia would be a far poorer place.

25th March 2019 - I can't heap enough praise on the GHDT for all the work they're doing, not just with sick and injured animals, but working with communities, liasing with the local university and the outreach work that's all happening because of them. We were privileged enough to be shown around by the wonderful Muhamed (apologies if the spelling is wrong!) and it's clear that his passion and dedication are shared by everyone there.

What an exemplary project this is. Thank you for all you do. X

15th March 2019 - If you are interested in animal welfare and how it is developing in the Gambia, this centre at Makasutu is a must! It is a centre of excellence, for the care and dedication given to the animals they deal with on a daily basis, and also the never ending number of new cases / rescue missions they get called to. They also have fantastic facilities for teaching the animal care students and run apprentice programmes, training the next set of animal care givers. Their work is starting to reach far and wide across Gambia, with tireless efforts made by Numu and the team going into schools to teach the next generation that animals are sentient beings and deserving of our love and respect. The team amaze me with what they achieve, with a few memorable cases in the recent past, eg the poisoned beach dogs, they managed to pull back from, literally, the brink of death. When I first visited, five years ago, the centre at Makasutu was still being built, but as I stood in the building site, I knew it would be a place I would return to again and again, as indeed I have. The experiences I have had there are invaluable and irreplaceable. My wholehearted love and respect goes to the team and of course the wide ( and getting wider!) variety of animals they help. I encourage anyone to visit, and also to support financially this wonderful charity. So, would I recommend this place? With all my heart xxx

November 16th, 2016 - Dear Heather,

I am writing to express my sincere thanks for the most amazing 2 weeks I have ever spent outside of Ireland! I had an unbelievable time and will forever have fond memories of your wonderful charity.

What struck me the most was the compassion and care shown to every single patient regardless of the state it was presented in or the temperament, we all know how tricky a difficult donkey can be when he isn't happy! The people working for you are exceptionally patient and it is quite clear how much of a love they have for their patients. It is sad to say but at home I have many times witnessed vets or helpers lacking this sense of vocation!

Elaine is a wonderful asset to the charity and took exceptionally good care of me, making me feel extremely welcome from day one. Langbaba was most grateful when I departed and insisted on escorting me to the airport which was a lovely send off.

I was delighted to purchase one of Mustafa's wonderful tapestries which hangs in my living room as we speak.

Please extend my thanks to your team for such a fantastic experience, which involved me learning where water melons actually come from - much to the amusement of the boys, I didn't realise they grew in fields!!!

I am so looking forward to seeing Makasutu when it is ready!!!!

Best wishes,

Jenny

November 6th, 2016 - I just wanted to say a huge thank you for letting me stay at GHDT, my project went well and I absolutely loved my time there...I didn't want to leave!!

I think the charity is incredible, I was absolutely blown away at the work that you and everyone who works there does. I felt honoured to even be a small part of it!

The boys at Sambel were amazing, not only did they make me feel at home and treat me like family but they taught me so much! Some of them you can really tell feel it in their heart!

Elaine also was a star, you've picked an incredible woman to volunteer with you!

September 20th, 2016 - We are absolutely delighted to announce that three very well known and well respected people have endorsed our work and agreed to be our patron and supporters.

Nigel Havers has very kindly agreed to be our Patron and said, "It is a privilege to be able to call myself a patron of this charity which from its very grass roots literally saves lives and benefits both human and animal lives in such a holistic way. The rest of the world take note! Nigel Havers.” We are very grateful to him for his patronage.

John Humphrys has also endorsed and supports our work, and we are extremely proud that he approves of our approach of "helping people to help themselves" It means a great deal to us to have such support.

Canadian children’s author, Robert Munsch, has also endorsed and supported our work, donating a signed copy of one of his books for a fundraiser.
