A Big Thank You to VetMedCare

January 17th , 2012 - On behalf of Phoenix, one of our sponsor animals, we would like to say a very big Thank You to VetMedCare and Dr Norbert Freitag who very kindly donated one of their Horsebody equine products. The Horsebody is a 90% polyamide and 10% spandex 'outfit' for a horse, which offers general protection as well as protection against mosquito bites.

Phoenix was extremely seriously burnt in an accidental stable fire and suffered burns over a large proportion of his body. Whilst he has made an excellent recovery it has been very difficult to protect the damaged skin on his back from the sun and dirt, and for this reason we contacted VetMedCare to see if they were able to help us.

Within just a few days we had received the Horsebody at our headquarters in the UK, and we were lucky to have a volunteer flying out to The Gambia almost immediately who was able to fit it into his luggage.

Phoenix looks wonderful in his new clothes, and I think he feels rather important with them on! The Horsebody allows Phoenix to roll comfortably without getting any dirt into his damaged skin, and it also prevents his pink patches from becoming sun burnt in the hot Gambian sun.

The in-built fly fringe does a fantastic job of protecting his eyes from the dust and the flies and he generally seems a lot more relaxed when he has the Horsebody on.

Sadly, due to the fact that Phoenix lost his ears from the fire damage, he doesn't look quite so smart as the horses on the VetMedCare website with his Horsebody on, but we think it is a cute look with the floppy ears! Having the Horsebody has made caring for Phoenix's fragile skin so much easier and we would like to say Thank You very much VetMedCare, for your kind donation to Phoenix.

October 3rd, 2011 - We now have a lovely little ‘read and colour’ donkey book which will go out to as many of the school children in our area as possible and hopefully in the future, if funding permits, every child will receive one when they go to school.

Big thanks must go to Mary May and her son in law Greg, who put the book together and to David and Sue Hewittson-Brown who also helped with the logistics. I know a lot of people gave their help and advice with the book, and to everyone involved, we would like to give our thanks.

The book is also available to buy online from the GHDT website shop page and would make a delightful Christmas gift for a child.

Everyone at the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to Sarah Fisher and Anthony Head for their generous support, encouragement and patronage.

Despite their hectic schedules, they have worked very hard to bring the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust to the media’s attention and raise world-wide awareness for our activities, which is truly helping to fund our work out in the Gambia.
