With the assistance of the village elders, we shall identify families who would benefit from the assistance of a donkey, but cannot afford to purchase one. We will either give them donkeys that we have 'rehabilitated' or with your help, purchase a suitable donkey for them. If a donkey is purchased for a family you will be able to name it.

Once the family has been identified, they will visit our centre for a few days for training. They must undertake never to abuse the donkey, which will be checked regularly by our teams. The donkey will remain the property of the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust and if there is ever any evidence of abuse, it will be immediately confiscated from the owner. After training, the owner will take the donkey home with a bridle, headcollar and a harness.

In future years you may like to assist your 'owner' with a donkey cart, plough or other agricultural implements. He will then be able to work his donkey on his own farm and hire it out to other villagers when his own ploughing is done. In time we shall put up pictures of the donkeys that you have named on the website together with reports of their progress.
